A Classic
Somehow I got through high school and college without reading many of the great classics that everyone just assumes are required reading at some point in school. Seriously, how can someone manage to avoid Pride and Prejudice all those years? Another great classic that I just read this week is A Separate Peace by John Knowles. This book was amazing. The writing style, full of wit and gentle insightfulness drew me in, and the subject matter was classic. It's about the relationship of two boys mainly, against the backdrop of World War Two. The narrator's (one of those boys) psyche is stripped bare in front of the reader. I was totally absorbed. You've probably all read it before, but if not you should some day!

I reread A Seperate Peace a couple of years ago and was reminded of why it was one of my favorite high school reads. I'm also going to host a mini Pride & Prejudice book discussion on my blog for the month of April (how did I get to be 32 and not have this on my list of books read???)

I've never read Pride & Prejudice either. (Maybe it wasn't considered a "classic" WAY back when we were in school, Becky!) And, I have started A Separate Peace several times, but never get around to finishing it. It's not that I don't like it, it's just that I get distracted & forget about it. I need to try reading it again after I finish our current book. Thanks for the reminder!
I remember absolutely loving A Separate Peace when I read it as a kid. One of my teachers recommended it to me, and it is one that has stuck in my memory over the years. I would like to reread it though since it has been a very long time since I read it. I had to read Pride and Prejudice in high school. I thought it was good, but it's not one that was one of my all time favorites.
Ever since I saw the movie "Pride & Prejudice," I've wanted to read the book. I can't believe I never read it either. I didn't realize that the main character of P & P is Elizabeth (Lizzy) and Emma is the main character of "Emma." My girls are 2 main characters of Jane Austen's books! I read "Emma" long ago and loved it...I need to read P & P now. I may pick up 2 nice copies of these books to put in the girl's bedrooms.
