Bossypants

Author:   Tina Fey

One-sentence summary: Fey tells a little about her past, working at SNL, and her life on 30 Rock and as a mom with her usual intelligence and humor.

B.A.D. Girls Book Rating:  7

Our favorite thing about it:  One word…hilarious.

Our least favorite thing about it:  The book is a little choppy and disjointed.

Main Topics of Discussion: Improv, Humor, SNL, 30 Rock, Parents, Children, Relationships, Work

Our favorite quote: “In improv there are no mistakes, only beautiful happy accidents.” (p.85)

Notes:  It cannot be said enough…this book is a hilarious, delightful, and easy read. We all enjoyed Fey’s humor and could hear her voice when we read the book. We all talked about how we literally laughed out loud so many times while reading. We all highlighted so many quotes and things we found poignant or funny or both. Fey is a master at sarcasm and wit. She discusses several difficult topics using humor. She gets her point across almost subtly, but effectively (women in comedy, homosexuals, parenting, etc.).

The one thing that was a little disappointing is that the book is organic in structure. There is no straight progression in the story although it does roughly move from Fey’s childhood to adulthood. She takes tangents off left and right, and while they are funny, it makes the overall book feel more like a compilation of stories than a linear story.

There is not much more to say about our discussion because so much of it was sharing the parts we found funny. We really had the best time reading quotes to each other and laughing over them again.

Memorable Meeting Moments:  We discussed this book at the lake house in the media room before we watched a movie. We have not read this type of book before as a book choice and it was a fun change of pace and a particularly good choice to discuss on our weekend away!

What We Ate:  Ummm…popcorn and cookies!

This book is so funny! Nothing better than the atmosphere we had to discuss and laugh out loud!
