Mrs. Endicott's Splendid Adventure

Author:  Rhys Bowen

Who Picked the Book: Rachel

One-sentence summary: A recently divorced English woman gathers two friends and heads off to France to make a new life.

B.A.D. Girls Book Rating: 8

Our favorite thing about it: The story and the characters.

Our least favorite thing about it: The rushed second half of the book.

Main Topics of Discussion: Marriage, Friendship, Women, War

Our favorite quote: "How easy it would have been to retreat to a dismal cottage in England and feel sorry for ourselves for the rest of our lives. Instead we’ve had a great adventure."

Notes: We really liked the overall story of this book and how it ended. We loved following along on the ladies' freedom adventure! We thought the character development of the three main women was excellent and we loved that. The detail that was put into the first third of the book was really enjoyable. After that, the pacing seemed rushed and the events just started happening one after the other without much detail or build-up. The romances were not satisfactorily developed and therefore the second half seemed to read like more of a plot summary.

Other things we loved - the setting, the villa and the food. We loved the discussions of English vs. French ways. We loved the WWII setting and learned a couple of new things, believe it or not.

Memorable Meeting Moments: We met at Rachel's house, just the four DFW ladies. We completely forgot to take photos, which is why there is only one of us and the dessert!

What We Ate: Ricotta Chicken bake, Roasted Brussels Sprouts, Parmesan Orzo, Focaccia and Olive Oil Herb Dip, Chocolate Cobbler and Ice Cream.
