A Darker Shade of Magic

Author: V.E. Schwab

One-sentence summary: Kell, who can travel between universes, finds himself in an unwanted pickle concerning magic and his "home" London and Delilah, a girl from Grey London, helps him along the way.

B.A.D. Girls Book Rating: 8

Our favorite thing about it: It was a great story that also had great world-building.

Our least favorite thing about it: It's full-on fantasy/magic so if you're not into that, you won't like it!

Main Topics of Discussion: Magic, London, "Traveling"

Our favorite quote: “I'd rather die on an adventure than live standing still.”

Notes: We found this book and the story to be very entertaining. The world the author lays out is also very imaginative and detailed. We also loved the interesting, multi-faceted characters. We thought the decision to have each London assigned a color was inventive and gave each a "theme" before we even learned about them. Most of us loved the magical elements and the struggle between the good and bad sides of magic, which is the central conflict in the book. This is the first book in a trilogy and most of us liked it enough to continue reading the series.

Memorable Meeting Moments: This was a joint-pick book and so we met up at Sueno for dinner and moved to Starbucks for after-dinner discussion.

What We Ate: Amazing cocktails, tacos, enchiladas, churros.
