Who Picked the Book: Dara

One-sentence summary: A young man rescues a grumpy older man with a friendly dog and is pulled into not only his inner circle, but his biggest secret as well, which leads him to another world and a dark ruler to defeat.

B.A.D. Girls Book Rating: 7

Our favorite thing about it: A great modern fairy tale.

Our least favorite thing about it: For some of us, the "intro" was a bit long.

Main Topics of Discussion: Classic Fairy Tales, Storytelling, Dark vs. Horror

Our favorite quote: “It’s the stories of our childhood that make the deepest impressions and last the longest.”

Notes: This was such an interesting read. I don't think any of us knew what to expect. Except that we knew Stephen King is an excellent writer. The character development in the beginning of the book between Charlie and Mr. Bowditch was really well-done and serves to set up the whole premise for the rest of the book, although the "real" action doesn't take place until well in to the story. That's why some of us felt that the intro was a bit too long. It did take a while to even discover that there was another world, although it's hinted at. And Charlie's time there is very much a fairly tale, albeit a somewhat dark and twisted one, just like the classics. King paints some very vivid pictures of the afflictions the people of Empis are faced with. We loved the references to other fairy tales and we loved the characters and overall story.

Memorable Meeting Moments: We actually had this meeting (for November) on December 1st after having to reschedule a couple of times due to conflicts cropping up!

What We Ate: Josh made us crudite with hummus and crostini to start. We had Holiday margaritas (delicious), and pot roast with potatoes and carrots. For dessert, Dara made us pumpkin dump cake with ice cream and whipped cream.
